Chief Wes Lail
Wes came on board March 13, 2006 and brings over 20 years of experience in Fire Protection, Emergency Management, Safety Education, and Regulatory Compliance. He is a graduate of Central Piedmont Community College and Western Carolina University and
has a Masters Degree in Public Administration (with a concentration in Emergency Management) from UNC-Pembroke. A North Carolian native, Wes' work experience includes Fire Captain with the City of Hickory Fire Department, Coordinator of NC Fire & Rescue, and EMS Certification Programs for Caldwell and Watauga Counties, Director of the Emergency Prepardness Technology Associates Degree program at Caldwell Community College, Fire Chief for the City of Lewisville and the City of King, most recently as Certification Specialist for the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal. |

WELCOME
The Morehead City Fire Department was established in 1906 and the Morehead City EMS
Department was formed in 1958 as Morehead City Rescue Squad. On July 1, 2000 the
departments were merged. The
Department protects a City of 6.81 square miles and the Mitchell
Village-Crab Point Fire District of 11 square miles, with an approximate population of 20,000 residents between two districts. The Department currently operates two ambulances, two engines,
one engine-tanker, one quint truck, one fireboat, one dive/rescue boat,and several cars and pickup trucks for support functions.
Morehead City Fire has a split insurance rating of 5/9S and is constantly working on improving
that rating. The Department has 31 career personnel comprised of a Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire
Marshal, (3) Captains, (6) Lieutenants and the remainder as Firefighter/Engineers. Seven of the career staff have EMT-Paramedic Certification, several have EMT-IntermediateCertification and
the remaining personnel have EMT-Basic Certification.
The Department employs twelve (12) part-time personnel and uses a paid on call staff of
fifteen (15) members comprised of an Assistant Chief, Captain, two (2) Lieutenants and remaining firefighters. The Department answers approximately 2500 calls for service each year.

Educate to prevent harm; protect the people within our community, and to be kind and helpful to show we
care about our lives and the lives of others in our community by conducting ourselves in a courteous and professional manner.
Facilities
The Morehead City Fire/EMS Department currently has three stations; Fire Station I located at 1406 Bridges Street and Station II is located at 3308 Arendell Street. Station III is located at 5293 Hwy. 70.
Communications
The Department is dispatched and operates on its own VHF fire frequency (154.445). The dispatching is handled by the Police
Department. Calls for service come in on a County-wide Enhanced 911 system and all 911 calls inside the City Limits come directly to the dispatch office. Calls for Fire or Rescue service in the Rural District go to the County and they transfer them directly to
our dispatch.
Fire Marshal Office
The Fire Department currently has numerous Fire Inspectors. The town Fire Marshal works 8:00 AM thru 5:00 PM Monday thru Friday. The
other inspectors are used as a back up as needed. Several of our inspectors are Level III and certified by the state. They conduct commercial building
inspections and review plans. |

Fire Prevention
Fire Prevention is a very important part of our Fire Department, each year we conduct classes, toursand lectures to over a 1,000 children
and adults. The Fire Marshal coordinates all Fire Prevention and Public Education activities with each shift. Students are taught the
proper procedures for home escape planning, dialing 911, fire and injury prevention and many other safety applications. We also offer fire extinguisher classes to businesses and organizations in our response area. The only cost is to recharge the fire extinguishers used during the training. Volunteer/Paid on Call Firefighters
The Fire-EMS Dept. relies heavily on volunteer members and is always looking for good volunteer members. Requirements and Applications can be located here. Volunteers arenotified by radio paging with all members being issued pagers.
