The Morehead City Fire Department was established in 1906 and the Morehead City EMS Department was formed in 1958 as Morehead
City Rescue Squad. On July 1, 2000 the departments were merged. The Department protects a City of 6.81 square miles and the Mitchell
Village-Crab Point Fire District of 11 square miles, with an approximate population of 20,000 residents between two districts. The
Department currently operates two ambulances, two engines, one engine-tanker, one quint truck, one fireboat, one dive/rescue boat, and
several cars and pickup trucks for support functions.

Morehead City Fire has a split insurance rating of 5/9S and is constantly working on improving that rating. The Department has 31 career
personnel comprised of a Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire Marshal, (3) Captains, (6) Lieutenants and the remainder as Firefighter/Engineers. Seven
of the career staff have EMT-Paramedic Certification, several have EMT-Intermediate Certification and the remaining personnel have
 EMT-Basic Certification.

The Department employs twelve (12) part-time personnel and uses a paid on call staff of fifteen (15) members comprised of an Assistant Chief,
Captain, two (2) Lieutenants and remaining firefighters. The Department answers approximately 2500 calls for service each year.

Mission Statement: Educate to prevent harm; protect the people within our community, and to be kind and helpful to show we care about our lives and the lives of others in our community by conducting ourselves in a courteous and professional manner.

Facilities The Morehead City Fire/EMS Department currently has three stations; Fire Station I located at 1406 Bridges Street and Station II is located at 3308 Arendell Street.  Station III is located at 5293 Hwy. 70.

Communications The Department is dispatched and operates on its own VHF fire frequency (154.445). The dispatching is handled by the Police Department. Calls for service come in on a County-wide Enhanced 911 system and all 911 calls inside the City Limits come directly to the dispatch office. Calls for Fire or Rescue service in the Rural District go to the County and they transfer them directly to our dispatch.

Volunteers are notified by radio paging with all members being issued pagers.

Fire Marshal Office The Fire Department currently has numerous Fire Inspectors. The town Fire Marshal works 8:00 AM thru 5:00 PM Monday thru Friday.  The other inspectors are used as a back up as needed. Several of our inspectors are Level III and certified by the state. They conduct commercial building inspections and review plans.

Fire Prevention Fire Prevention is a very important part of our Fire Department, each year we conduct classes, tours and lectures to over a 1,000 children and adults. The Fire Marshal coordinates all Fire Prevention and Public Education activities with each shift.  Students are taught the proper procedures for home escape planning, dialing 911, fire and injury prevention and many other safety applications. We also offer fire extinguisher classes to businesses and organizations in our response area. The only cost is to recharge the fire extinguishers used during the training. For more information contact Morehead City Fire Marshal at 726-5308, or you can Email him at firemarshal@bizec.rr.com
